In this fast paced modern climate of over-stimulation, it has become commonplace for people to experience overwhelm, burnout, anxiety and panic attacks. Poor sleep quality also adds to this conundrum and exacerbates the hyper-vigilance of the central nervous system. Many of the pharmaceutical ’solutions’ prescribed for these conditions bring with them a collection of unwanted, negative side effects, making the management of these conditions complicated at best. Yet there are simple, natural solutions to these issues that have been used with enormous success for many centuries. The Hop plant (Humulus lupulus) is one such solution.
Nowadays most people know about Hops due to its widespread use in the brewing industry and the fermentation of beer and ale. Hops however, has been an incredibly important natural medicine utilised by the healing traditions of Europe and Asia throughout the last two thousand years. Historically it was prescribed in cases of insomnia, stress and anxiety, due to being such an effective sedative to the central nervous system.
Today we know that Hops contains resinous compounds such as lupulin, which stimulate production of a neurotransmitter in the body known as GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is the primary neurotransmitter that inhibits the function of the central nervous system, resulting in deeper sleep, rest and relaxation. This makes Hops an excellent medicine in the treatment of anxiety, stress and insomnia. Both alpha and beta-acids in the plant known as humulones and lupulones respectively (bitter compounds) have shown to exhibit antidepressant effects in in vivo studies that have been conducted.
Throughout the middle ages Hops was never used in the fermentation of ale. The popular drink at the time was known as ‘gruit’ which was a collection of fermented herbal formulas that were highly stimulating, energising and used as performance enhancing beverages by Nordic berserkers prior to battle. The 'German Beer Purity Act of 1516' put a swift end to gruit production - it was essentially the first ever drug regulation to be legislated, stating that all ale production must now be based upon a Hops formula. The reason for this was a political one - as beer was already consumed in large quantities by almost everyone, it was an effective method of quickly sedating entire populations and rendering them less able to revolt and oppose the establishment. That law is clearly still in practice to this day.
It is also true that when it is consumed in consistently large quantities, Hops can stimulate the production of female steroid hormones such as estradiol. Hops was never consumed in this way prior to the German Beer Purity Act of the 16th century, yet to this day we see men over-consuming hop-centred beer, with the accompanying low levels of testosterone and side effects like erectile dysfunction etc. Strategic, medicinal use of Hops at the right dosage does not cause these effects at all.
Hops is a member of the Cannabaceae family of plants, which includes Cannabis and Hemp. In fact, Hops and Cannabis share 73% of identical genetic material. This means that there is a very significant overlap between the two species, in particular certain groups of enzymes as well as the cannabidiolic acid synthase gene, which is the reason that the CBD molecule is so effective medicinally. For this very reason, Hops can express its therapeutic activity through the body’s own endocannabinoid system - a vast network of cell-receptors that regulate biological functions such as immune function, appetite, pain management, mood, emotion and memory.
Fera Lupulus is a potent single extract of wild Hops - a genetically strong and diverse species that is infinitely more medicinal than the estrogen-dominant strains used in modern beer fermentation. Small doses of this potent extract can help ensure deeper and more restful sleep, reducing anxietyas well as modulating the stress response and circadian rhythm. This extract is seasonal and available in a VERY LIMITED QUANTITY.
